Making friends on Facebook seems pretty simple. At least we don’t have to go about it the hard way like we did back in the old days. That took a lot of effort. You’d have to actually meet someone, almost always face to face, then you’d have to try and figure out what to talk about and just pray you had something in common. You can’t walk away and go “idle” or blame “network issues” for why you’ve stopped having a conversation when you’re face to face.
When sites like Facebook showed up we sighed with relief because we could have 200 friends just with a few clicks of the mouse. How easy is that?! Well, actually it’s not. You’re quick to add the people you hang out with, your friends and family… but what about that kid you were kind-of sort-of friends with in high school? Or that ex from way back when that you wouldn’t mind catching up with? Or even the friend of a friend you hung out with at the bar the other night? Many of us agonize over whether or not we should “friend” them. And then if we do decide to take that leap we sit on pins and needles until they “accept” our virtual friendship… if they accept it.
Acceptance on Facebook is as big a deal as it is face to face. But once our virtual friendship is accepted there is much rejoicing to be had!
