When I was a kid I had a hamster named Liberty (got it on the 4th of July) and my sister killed it by trying to hug it too tightly. It was sad but she was just a toddler… I think I’ve blamed her long enough for that one so it might be time to let it go. We had a few other pets but Flipper, our little swimming goldfish, was a trooper. He outlasted them all.
I remember one time when Flipper was hardly a year old I came home and found him floating belly up in the tank. I tapped on the glass hoping to wake him up but he just kept floating there. I thought Flipper was sick but Dad told me he was just resting. Dad must have been right because when I came home from school the next day Flipper was swimming around like a brand new fish. He looked like he’d lost some weight too because he was a little smaller from the day before.
A couple months after that I came home to find Flipper gone. Mom told me that Dad wanted to show him off at work that day and low and behold when Dad came home from the office, Flipper was happily swimming around in a plastic bag filled with water. How clever of my dad to think to tote him around in his own little plastic bag carrying case!
When Flipper finally passed away 16 years later we flushed him down the toilet, cleaned out his tank and decided that it wouldn’t be right to replace the goldfish that had lasted far beyond the expected lifespan. Now, before you think I’m crazy, it took me a while but I finally caught on to my parents “replace the goldfish before she notices” game but I finally clued in. (DON’T tell my sister though, she still thinks he belongs in the Guinness Book of World Records!)
